Leather 101

The original Process

Tanning hide into leather involves a process which permanently alters the protein content structure of the skin.

In most cases the chosen leather for furniture is chrome( Mineral bathed) tanned leather. The process increases the pliability, stretchability, softness and quality.

Leather can be dyed several ways. To explain this in simple terms there are no red or brown cows, what you are seeing on the leather when it comes to colors are pigments that are very small in order to soak into the leather. That is why they are referred to dye instead of paint or a coating.

The system that is used is ultimately chosen to aesthetically achieve a rendering that will become part your home interiors color pallet.

From rich cherry reds to deep mahogany espresso browns.

Once the color is applied into the leather there is a last step that is done for two reasons. 1. To protect the color that was applied 2. For the leather to be protected from further absorption for spills and dirt.

Once a piece of furniture is has reached an age of 5-10 years you will see that the finish has usually become a stiff  worn plasticy feel. Oxidation and evaporation of moisture content from indirect or direct sun and use is the cause of this. The now protective finish coat has worn off , and now your are wearing down the finish or even into the leather itself. Leaving your leather surface open to spills and stains.

Your leather investment now looks aged and worn with areas stained resembling dark oil spots!

Preparation is Key

Leather Restore has the knowledge and skills to restore your leather furniture the right way by first removing the oxidized top coat that now feels like plastic. Our method starts with a light to medium sanding to remove oxidation. This also opens the surface for optimal absorption and adhesion.

Oil extraction: is a typical part of the process, areas where we put our hands or lay our head. Over time oil may obsorb into these areas. Oil extractor brings the oil to the surface. This process propmotes adhesion for any subsequent restoration procedures.

Deep cleaning is required not only to remove lose dirt that lifts soils, and corrects the PH while it cleans.
